| Dear Readers, We have purchased premium placement for the month of December in Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, and Chapters. We’ve been receiving reports from all over the country that suggest we are not receiving this placement in at least two of these chains. If you go into any of these stores, we would greatly appreciate it if you could let us know if you found Realms of Fantasy there, and if so, where was it placed–a special end cap placement, a face-out rack, or on the regular newsstand. This info will be very helpful for us. You can post the info into the comment field at the end of this post. Thank you all in advance. |

In Barnes & Noble in Bloomington Illinois: Found it on the magazine rack, top tier, third row, so you only saw the title. It was in the “literary” section of the magazines.
BN-Lakeline, Austin Texas, at 11:30 a.m. on 12/15. ROF is in the literary section on the newsstand, bottom row, back tier, with only about a 3-inch square of cover showing.
Chapters (Polo Park/Empress area) Winnipeg MB. I didn’t see it on display at all, though I was tired and might have missed it if it was not where I was looking; however, it most definitely was not on the main magazine rack.
Hello. RoF is available at the main Tulsa Barnes & Noble (8620 East 71st Street, Tulsa, OK – 918-250-5034), but you are not getting end-cap or special display space. The magazine on the bottom back row of the middle aisle newsstand in the general fiction and writing section. Masthead is visible only.
B&N – Court Street in Brooklyn – bottom shelf, standing with other magazines, half showing.
B&N – Encino, CA – I found copies both on the end cap (top row with “Inc”) and in the literary section.
Found it at 2 B&Ns in Wauwatosa and Brookfield, WI. Both were where they always are. In with the small-press literary magazines and writing magazines. No special placement.
Revise: It is in the end cap at B&N in Bloomington IL. I first saw it in the regular shelf and made the wrong assumption.
Chapters in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. It was prominently displayed on a cardboard standup beside one of the tables with this month’s latest and greatest offerings.
At the B&N in Boulder, Colorado, a week ago…nowhere to be found, and I searched diligently. The only thing remotely science fiction or fantasy was a comic book in the “Science Fiction” section (e.g., no Analog, either).
While stocked, there was no special treatment or special placement (end caps or otherwise) @ the B&N in Brooklyn Court Street http://store-locator.barnesandnoble.com/store/2965 This is a high traffic area in downtown Brooklyn.
Chapters in Ajax, On. It was right inside the front door, almost the first thing I saw when I entered the store. Better yet, it was also the 1st time I was able to see the ad placed by my publiser, Crescent Moon Press, and my book, A Witch’s Lament. A very cool birthday present.
The B & N in Midland, MI had the December issue in the usual cramped space (where you have to recognize it by the big “R” over the even bigger “F”) between neighbouring titles. They did, however, have the February issue fronted on a separate display (sort of an end-cap thing). Thanks for saving Realms!
I was delighted to finally find a few copies of ROF (Feb ‘10) after a diligent search at the Hot Springs, AR Books-A-Million — they were randomly placed in the upper back of the bottom rack in the regular magazine wall section (basically, you had to be kneeling to see them). I don’t think they had any idea of where to put them. It was not in the literary mag section, nor with other sci-fi magazines; although it was a few sections away from the “Art” magazines.
In Huntsville, TX, there’s not a regular B&N, only the college bookstore version. However, there’s a local chain called Hastings Books and Music, which is where I buy the magazine. At this store, it’s in the literary section (bottom of that shelf section) and it’s not blocked by any other magazines, with about 1/3 of the top of the magazine visible.
I dont know if it is relevant, but it is no longer available in Charleston, WV at teh Books-a-Million, August ‘09 was the last available issue here. I am glad i finally got the first issue of my subscription, but woudl love a source for back issues/reprints if it is available.
Thanks for the info. I’m afraid we don’t carry any of the issues that were published by Sovereign Media. When I filled out my collection several years back, I found Ebay to be an excellent resource to fill in missing issues.
