There have been a number of questions from the fiction writers about the women in fantasy issue. So I’m posting about this again, a little more at length this time. Besides the fiction, I’ve also seen a couple of questions about the art and the nonfiction, so I’d like to address that a little more as well.
So, once more, Realms of Fantasy is planning a themed issue for August 2011. The theme will be women in fantasy. It will address all three departments of the magazine, these being nonfiction, art, and fiction. Fiction submissions for this issue are open to women only. Stories dealing with sexism, gender, and other areas important to feminist speculative literature are particularly welcome, but are not required. The stories themselves do not necessarily need to feature a female protagonist. If it’s decided that a story isn’t right for this issue (or if the issue has already been filled in terms of its allotted fiction) but is still a good match with Realms of Fantasy, we’re more than happy to purchase your submission for a different issue of the magazine.
If you’d like to submit to this issue, submissions should be postmarked no later than November 15th, 2010. This will give us enough time to match the stories up with the artists. The artists for this issue will also be women. If you’re an artist and you’re interested in being part of this issue, it will be a while before we’re ready to do anything on this front. First we need to see which stories we’re using. Besides that, it will be some months before we’re ready to send anything for this issue out on assignment. With that said, your submissions to the magazine are always welcome.
In terms of nonfiction, it will be handled by our usual columnists. Many of these columns will also be dealing with women in fantasy, thus allowing the magazine to explore this idea from all three departments.
The question has also come up as to whether writers might make multiple submissions, with one story submitted for consideration to the women in fantasy issue and one submitted for consideration in Realms of Fantasy’s other issues. While we normally don’t allow multiple submissions, this time around we’re making an exception. Please feel free to submit up to two stories to us, one for the women in fantasy issue and one for the other issues. If you choose to do this, please make that clear in your cover letter. Simultaneous submissions are still not being accepted under any circumstances.
We hope this clears up any confusion. But if you still have questions, please feel free to ask.
