Dreams of Decadence Relaunches!

by Publisher Warren Lapine on February 20, 2010

We are relaunching Dreams of Decadence. The old incarnation of Dreams specialized in vampire fiction. While vampires will still be welcome in this iteration, we are broadening the focus to include all forms of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. The magazine will be a full sized, full color, bi-monthly magazine.

Dreams of Decadence is opening to e-mail submissions today and will remain open to e-mail submissions until the end of February. This is a test to determine what the volume of e-mail submissions will be and if we can find an effective way to handle it. In early March we will make a decision as to whether or not we will be able to accept e-mail submissions going forward.
Guidelines below.

Guidelines

Editor: Angela Kessler

Dreams of Decadence is a full-size, bimonthly magazine devoted to urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

Fiction: Looking for well-written, plot-driven stories, 1,000–7,000 words, with well-developed characters. We want to see original ideas and story concepts, not rehashes. I like stories that explore new territory or offer a new perspective. Some of my favorite writers are Patricia Briggs, Charles De Lint, Charlaine Harris, Laurell K. Hamilton, and J. D. Robb. I like elegantly-crafted prose, but remember: stories do need well-developed characters and plot no matter how lovely the writing style may be. We are pleased to announce that we are paying 1 to 7 cents per word for original fiction. (Of course, all contributors will receive a contrib copy as well.) In general, reprints will be considered only if last published at least two years ago. Payment on acceptance.

Poetry: $5 for short poems such as haiku, $10 for longer ones. Multiple submissions encouraged.

Form: Standard manuscript form. If you want your manuscript returned, you must enclose a SASE with the appropriate postage (stamped, NOT metered). Otherwise, enclose a #10 SASE for our reply. E-mail submissions are being accepted on a trial basis until the end of February 2010. We buy First English Language Rights (one-time rights for reprints); no simultaneous submissions.

Poetry vs Manuscript: The Format Question

During this trial email period, would you want poetry as part of the email, or as an attachment? Regarding the multiple poem subs – I would go under an impression that a group of 3-5 longer poems and perhaps 10 of shorter, such as haiku or tanka is appropriate? This is the general grouping I’ve seen in my poetry market research, and wonder if it is applicable here.

Will you consider stories that have already been to ROF for DoD? I’m thinking the tastes might be a bit different…?

Warren Lapine February 20, 2010 at 9:25 pm

Willis, you can submit poems either inline or as attachments. And the numbers yu mention sound right to us.

Melissa, yes Angela will indeed considered stories for Dreams that were passed over by Realms.

Thank you.

I was wondering if the cover letter would follow the same guidelines as RoF. It seems like that would work, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks!

Liz, I just finished reading the ROF Guidelines and didn’t see any mention of a cover letter, so I’m not sure about that. But while a cover letter is nice, it will not be required by Dreams. If you have credits, you’ll definitely want to use a cover letter and make sure we know what your credits are.

Thanks! I feel that a batch will wing on over before month’s end!

Thanks, I must have gotten mixed up!

This is great! I’ve been looking through the site at the submission requirements. The mail-in directions are very specific, but I can’t find more about the email directions except on this page.

Since it’s going by email, should the Subject Header read something specific? Should the body of the email text contain anything particular?

Warren Lapine February 28, 2010 at 5:10 pm

No, the only thing that e-mail address is being use for is submissions.

Lisa June 3, 2010 at 7:25 pm

Well this IS good news! If you decide the emails are more than you can handle I hope you would consider continuing to accept email submissions from those outside the USA and Canada for whom the cost of postage to the other side of the world can be quite prohibitive. (Australia, New Zealand etc…)
Thank you for this new opportunityfor paranormal writers.
