Folkroots
Folkroots is a regular nonfiction column appearing in Realms of Fantasy that deals with folklore, myth, and related topics. The column appeared with the very first issue of the magazine back in October 1994 and proved to be one of its most popular features. The founding editor of this column was Terri Windling, who also handled writing many of the articles herself over the years. Terri continued providing authorial material and editorial guidance for this column until the October 2008 issue before moving on, a run of fourteen years. Her handpicked editorial successors were Ari Berk & Kristen McDermott, both of whom had contributed a number of articles to Folkroots in the past.
Ari & Kristen oversaw the Folkroots column through the August 2010 issue, or about two years. In July of 2010, it was announced that longtime RoF contributor, Theodora Goss, would be taking over as the new editor of the Folkroots column. Editor Douglas Cohen oversaw the column on an interim basis for the October and December 2010 issues before handing off the reins to Theodora, who started her editorial run with the February 2011 issue, which also happened to be the first issue under new publisher, Damnation Books.
Terri Windling has collected many of the Folkroots articles published in RoF while she was the column’s editor and has published them over on the Journal of Mythic Arts website. While we can’t publish them here without the permission of the authors, you can read them on the website by following the provided link.
